Robert Henderson (1798 – February 16, 1875) was born circa 1797–1798, the son of Robert Henderson of Dundee, Angus. He pursued his higher education at St John's College, Cambridge, where he was admitted on November 26, 1817, and matriculated in October 1818. During his time at Cambridge, he became a founding member of the elite intellectual and social undergraduate society, the Cambridge Apostles, which was established around 1820. He progressed academically to earn his Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in 1822, followed by his Master of Arts (MA) degree in 1825.
Following his graduation, Henderson entered the clergy. He was ordained as a deacon in Lincoln on September 22, 1822, with letters dimissory from Canterbury, having previously been ordained as a priest on March 3 of that same year. His early ecclesiastical service began in 1822 at Little Chart in Kent. Later in his career, he moved to Scotland to serve as the incumbent of the Episcopal Church in Stirling, Stirlingshire.
Henderson passed away at the age of 78 on February 16, 1875, in Stirling, with notices of his death recorded in the Guardian and the Canterbury Act Book. Regarding any potential LGBTQ links, historical records and academic contexts pertaining to his life and his role as an early Cambridge Apostle reveal no documentation or direct links concerning queer identity, as his life pathway aligned strictly with traditional 19th-century clerical and professional norms.
